In Russian you pronounce it Chai-Lis. In old Europe you would get your last name based of your job. Together it means life saver. One of my ancestors was probably some sort of life saver and this is where my name originated from.

Why is the family artifact significant?

It signifies freedom and a better life as when Jews were immigrating from the Soviet they were not allowed to bring any money. They would purchase things and then sell them later in America. These were one of the items. My grandfather wanted to keep them.

Why was my great grandfather significant to my mother?

My great grandfather was significant because he was like the leader and backbone of my moms family. My mom had a small family that was composed of her, her mom, and her grandma and grandfather. Since my mom was raised without a father he stepped in as the father figure for her.
