  • Much stronger than wooden castles.
  • Stone was difficult to burn.
  • Thick walls provided protection.

Disadvantages:

  • Expensive to build.
  • Took a long time to construct.
  • The keep could still be surrounded by attackers.

what were some battle tactics and weapons used in this time?

1. Siege

An attacking army surrounded a castle and prevented supplies from entering. The goal was often to force defenders to surrender because of hunger or lack of supplies.

2. Battering Ram

A heavy object was used to attack gates or walls. Soldiers could use a protective structure around the ram to reduce the danger from defenders.

3. Siege Tower

A large tower was moved towards the castle wall so attackers could reach the defenders on top of the wall.
