What if your school counselor isn't available? Who do you go to?

Here at GCCS, we are a TEAM that cares about you! If I'm not available and you have a concern, you can talk another member of the MS Team -- Mrs. Edwards, Mr. Dapo, or Mrs. Gray, or any of your awesome teachers. And in the event of an emergency, tell a staff member IMMEDIATELY.

It is okay to come down with a friend.

True...IF your teacher gives permission! We LOVE supportive friends that get you to the right people. Once I know what's going on, at that point I may ask your supportive friend to go back to class so they're not missing too much class time.

Do school counselors give discipline (i.e. detentions, suspensions, etc.)?

No, you are NOT in trouble with me. :)

200

When is my school counselor available?

During School Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-3:30PM

If you email or make a Calendly appointment outside of hours your are in school (including evenings, weekends, and breaks), I will NOT see it until the next school day!

200

If I need to talk, I can just leave class.

-False! Be sure to ask your teacher! For safety reasons, teachers need to know where their students are at all times.

-If it's an emergency, let them know it's an emergency when you are asking for permission to leave.

-If you made an online appointment through Calendly, you can ask your teacher and come down to my office at that time. If you forget, I will either come to your class and see if you still want to talk, or I will check in with you later and see if you want to find another time to meet.

Can I visit even if I don't have any concerns or questions?

Yes, just not during class time! I really enjoy spending time with students and having fun. You can request to have lunch with me (by yourself or with friends)! I also am at recess as often as I am able, and I LOVE talking/hanging out with students at recess! School counselors aren't just here to talk about the hard stuff; we can talk when things are awesome! (As long as you're not missing out on important class time.)

300

What is Confidentiality?

It means that your counselor will not tell other people about your talks unless:

Someone could get hurt or is getting hurt. Or if you give me permission to share! And keep in mind that I do partner with families, so there may be times that I share with them certain things we are working on. :)

300

I go to the school counselor's office every day if I want.

False. I am here for you when you need support or a listening ear, but the goal of school counseling is to work on problems so that you can stay in class as much as possible! Sometimes it may take more than one time talking about a problem for us to work it out, but if it is an every day, lingering problem, we will work on a plan with your teachers and family to get you the support you need!

I also come to recess when I am able, which is a great time for us to talk or hang out, and you can request to have lunch with me either on your own or with friends.

If you are concerned for a friend, what should you do?

Talk to me or another school adult about your concern. Don't carry that burden alone; we as school staff have been trained to handle your concerns, and we are here to help all of our students! If you would like to report something anonymously, I will not share your name when I check in with the student.

400

You can only see a counselor if you have a BIG problem.

False! We handle little problems too! It's better that we address it when it's small before it becomes a BIG problem. :)

Name ONE WAY you can be safe online.

-Don't share your passwords with anyone

-Report inappropriate content/cyberbullying and tell a trusted adult

-Don't share personal information online

-Remember that not everyone is who they say they are!

500

A school counselor is the same thing as an outside counselor or therapist.

FALSE! I do not have the same training as an outside counselor or therapist. While we are licensed mental health professionals, school counselors cannot diagnose or treat depression, anxiety, or any other conditions, but I CAN help you develop coping skills and be a support to help you get through hard times! School counseling is meant to be short-term and solution-focused. If I feel that a student could benefit from talking more in-depth with someone with more clinical training about something that's going on, I may recommend talking to an outside counselor.
