FALSE! We have nearly 1000 students in our school and we need to schedule our time strategically. If you request to see us, we will find a time that works in our schedule and your schedule to meet with you.

TRUE. If you are ever worried about a friend, you can always talk to us about this and we can work together to find ways to support them.

FALSE.  We care about all parts of your life and make the connection of how those parts may impact you at school. When we talk to you about your grades and credits, we want you to succeed and help you accomplish your goals.

TRUE! We will teach you all about different careers, how they align with your interests and goals, and steps needed to make those career goals come true!

If you need to speak with a counselor, how do you let them know?

You must complete a "request to see a counselor" form located in your classes or in the front office. You can complete the form and turn it into your teacher (who will then deliver to us) or deliver it to the front office.

TRUE. We are here to help you navigate through family, social, personal and academic concerns.

TRUE. In elementary school, you are learning foundational skills that will help you at more advanced levels. For instance, if you do not know your basic times tables, you will not understand how to do algebra in high school.

Who does the school counselor work with?

EVERYONE! We work with students, teachers, families, administrators and community members to ensure that you are getting the resources and support that you need to succeed in your academics and in life.

TRUE OR FALSE: I'm having an argument with a friend, I need to leave class and speak with a counselor about this right away.

FALSE. Academics will always take priority. Counselors are always there to help problem solve with students, but we would never excuse you from a math lesson to discuss the argument you had with a friend.

What's the difference between tattling and reporting?

Tattling is when someone tells an adult trying to get someone else in trouble. Reporting is when there is a serious issue and the behavior needs to stop immediately.

TRUE OR FALSE: If you've gotten a bad grade, that means you aren't smart.

FALSE. Students may not do well on a test or in a class for many different reasons that has nothing to do with intelligence (pandemic, family tragedy, personal issue, conflict with friends, anxiety etc).

Where are the counselor's offices located?

Mrs. Bagley is located in the admin hallway downstairs, and Ms. Thomas is located upstairs in room 228 (next to science and computers).

What does confidentiality mean?

It means that what you say to a counselor stays with the counselor, although there are times where counselors have to breach confidentiality.

What is a healthy way you can work out your anger?

We will accept a variety of different answers!

Examples: Deep breaths, asking for help, drinking water, asking to be excused for a moment, journaling, getting active/playing sports (when appropriate), listening to music (when appropriate), using stress ball or other de-stress item, talking it out.

TRUE OR FALSE: I can specifically request to see my school counselor during my Math or Reading test.

FALSE. Your academics are of utmost priority. Your counselors will find a time in your schedule to meet with you, trying their best to avoid taking time from difficult subjects and assessments.

FALSE. We may be brought into the situation after to help students restore trust that may have been broken as a result the discipline issue, but we are never one to initiate the discipline.

TRUE OR FALSE: If I or someone is in danger, I need to write a counselor's note to let them know.

FALSE! If someone is in danger, you need to let an adult know right away. Sometimes we don't receive counselor notes right away, so if there is an emergency we wouldn't see it in time. PLEASE tell your teacher and they can have you speak to a counselor or administrator right away.

How do you deal with someone being mean to you?

We will accept various answers!

Ignore them, seek support from friends, ask to resolve the issue with the person, asking for them to stop, reporting it when it becomes repetitive and they've ignored your efforts to stop.

TRUE OR FALSE: If a student forgot or didn't complete their homework, they can come to the counselor's office to finish it.

FALSE. Counselors are here to help students learn important skills like responsibility and time management. Allowing you to complete your homework in our office if you didn't complete it at home does not help you learn these skills.
