How often will you have a counselor lesson?

Every other Wednesday.   Unless there is a 4 day week.

What is one thing a school counselor does? 

Teach classroom lessons, small groups, talk with students, help support our school.

Can you see the school counselor whenever you want? 
No. I do have a schedule with lessons and small groups so I may not always be available.  I do try to see my students as soon as my schedule allows.

Do you need parent approval to be a part of my small groups? 

Yes.  Parents do have to say it is ok if you participate in a small group.

Healthy Friendships, Coping Skills, Dealing with Anger, Conflict Resolution, Character building skills, Careers.  There will be others that we may dive into.

Just like any other class.  We treat others with respect.  We don't talk when others are talking. Listen and pay attention.

Talk about problems. Teach different skills and topics.

What does confidentiality mean? 

We will keep the things we discuss between us.  Unless you say it is alright to discuss with someone else (teacher, principal, parents, friends)

Where is the counselors office located? 

Beside the main office.  Right beside the mirror in the hallway and the girls bathroom.

I will not be coming into classrooms this year, where will our counseling lessons take place? 

Easy.  We're here in Ms. Harrison's room.  Sometimes we may explore other areas just to change things up.

Will your school counselor ever give you detention, or hand out punishments? 

No.  We may discuss your actions, and it may not be the most fun conversation, but I will never give you detention or take away recess.

I have a mailbox outside my office door.  Who has access to getting the mail out of the mailbox?

ME!! I'm the ONLY person who has a key.

When do small groups typically take place?  

As my schedule allows, it usually happens during your recess, one time per week for 5-6 weeks.

If your friend tells you someone is hurting them, but asks you to promise not to say anything.  Should you honor your friends request or let an adult know who can help?

If someone is being hurt or in danger, we do need to tell a trusted adult.  Even if our friend gets mad at us, we want to help keep our friends safe.

Small problems, trying to get someone else in trouble, etc.

When it involves you or someone else getting hurt or being in danger.

Anywhere between 3-6.

Why might a school counselor need to talk to a students' parents? 

If there are difficulties at home or school.  If your parent is concerned or needs guidance.
