What are things your counselor enjoys outside of counseling? (hobbies)

Spending time with family, listening to music, reading, hiking, beach days, baseball, watching my daughter coach and play field hockey, listening to my son play piano.

How do I get referred to the counselor?

You can self refer. Parents sometimes ask me to speak with their child. Staff members might refer a student. I might just want to meet you:)

Yes!  We can talk about what is troubling you and strategies that might help you out.

What type of education did you have to have in order to become a school counselor?

School Counselors need to  go to college but also have a special degree called a Master's Degree in Counseling in order to be a school counselor.

If someone is hurting you, you are going to hurt someone else, or you are hurting yourself.

What career did your counselor have before becoming a school counselor?

I was a classroom teacher.

Will the counselor tell others what we talk about?

No, counselor's keep things confidential.

This means that what you say in the counselor's office is not shared with others without your permission.

Do I get sent to the counselor if I get in trouble?

No. However, if you got in trouble for something, Mrs. Glawe or Mrs.Williams or your teacher may ask me to talk with you after about how to better manage your emotions or make choices that are helpful to you and others.

How many counselors are there for all the students at our school?

Just one! That is why I am not always available when you want to talk or have a lunch bunch.

What can I expect if I go to see my counselor?

You can expect me to accept you for the unique and special individual your are. You can expect me to listen to you. You can expect that I will show care for you and treat you with respect. You can expect that I will be honest with you and let you know if I am not able to see you you at that time.

I had to get a college degree and then a Master's degree in School Counseling.

Will your school counselor ALWAYS keep things confidential?

No.  If you or someone else is getting hurt, your counselor will need to tell someone to get help.

Does the counselor tells me what to do when I have a problem?

No. I will help you become a problem solver and help you think about the best way of handling things. I may offer suggestions and or strategies.

What is one thing my school counselor wants me to always remember?

You Matter!  I want you to always remember that your ideas, thoughts and feelings are important. You are unique and special just the way you are!

Who are trusted adults?

Trusted adults are people that you can go to if you have a problem or need help. This could be me as your school counselor but it could also be a teacher the principal or another staff member at school. Outside of school it could be your parent(s), a relative, a coach etc.

How do I request/ask to see my counselor?

You can let your teacher know that you would like to visit with me. Your teacher will let me know through email or give you permission to come see me.

What other things do school counselors do besides work with students?

I attend educational meetings. I meet with parents and teachers. I make phone calls and respond to emails. I have other paper work related to my job. I also have counselor meetings I go to to. I connect families with community resources. I work with staff, families and the school community.

Are school counselors just for students who have a problem or are worried or upset about something?

No! I am here for ALL students!  I am here to help you be your best self! You definitely do not need to have a problem or worry to come and see me!

What are ways that we can contribute to making our school a safe space for all?

We can treat other the way we want to be treated! We can be kind, say nice words, include others, be helpful, be a good listener and stand up for what is right:)
