During ancient times, Mount Elbrus was known as Strobilus and it was believed to be the location where Zeus had Prometheus chained to a rock. As punishment for stealing fire from the gods and bringing it to man he was chained to the top of the mountain - then known as Mount Kaukasos - where an eagle would come down and tear out his liver, which would regenerate until the eagle returned and begin the cycle again.
