Untreated ear and sinus infections can lead to this.
What is bacterial meningitis?

What are CSF proteins and cultures?
This can help prevent meningitis and is given to preteens and teens.
What is the meningococcal vaccine?
Meningitis is spread from person to person by this route.
Both bacterial and viral meningitis is spread by inhaling respiratory droplets of infected person during close contact (kissing, sneezing, coughing on someone, living close to them).
Fortunately, the bacteria that cause meningitis are not spread by casual contact or by simply breathing the air where a person with meningitis has been. The bacteria are very weak and can only survive for a short time outside the body—so they cannot live long in the air and are not carried on clothes, furniture, or other surfaces. People who have had casual contact are not at risk.
