A person's body becomes so accustomed to a particular substance that it can only function if the substance is present. When the substance is reduced or abruptly stopped, the person may experience withdrawal symptoms that range from mild discomfort to seizures.

Valium and Ayivan. At very high doses, they can cause effects similar to barbiturates, including unconsciousness. They are seldom fatal in overdoses, except when mixed with other drugs or alcohol. Commonly prescribed for the management of anxiety.

Include cleaning fluids, glues, paint thinners and removers, hair and deodorant sprays, gasoline for motor vehicles, lighter fluids and medical anesthetic gases, such as ether and nitrous oxide. Also know as volatile solvents, they produce feeling of euphoria, light-headedness, exhilaration and vivid fantasies or hallucinations. Their use can result in brain damage, asphyxiation and death.

Include heroin, codeine, morphine, hydromorphone, oxycodone, fentanyl, meperidine, pentazocine and propoxyphene. Produce short-term feeling euphoria and well-being and relieve pain. As pain relief, they have valuable medical use. They have a high risk of creating dependence. Because of the risk of abuse, these drugs are under the stirictest legal control.
