They did not use mortar. They cut stones to fit together perfectly.

The lack of mortar allows stones to move freely when earthquakes cause roads and buildings to shake. The room to wiggle and vibrate just a bit gives the rocks enough space to remain unbroken.

Why did Moctezuma II believe the world was ending soon.

Because of disasters that had been occuring. 

  • A flaming comet (1509): A massive comet appeared in the night sky, raining fire. Many Aztecs believed this foretold the destruction of their empire.
  • A burning temple: The temple of the war god Huitzilopochtli was destroyed by a fire that could not be extinguished, no matter how much water was poured on it.
  • The lake boiling: The waters of Lake Texcoco mysteriously "boiled," flooding houses and causing widespread destruction.
  • The weeping woman: A wailing woman was heard crying at night, telling the people they must flee their city. This legend is a precursor to the modern Mexican folktale, La Llorona.
  • Strange creatures: People claimed to have seen other bizarre omens, including a two-headed man and a bird with a strange mirror in its head.

What is the Aztec creation story? 

The Aztec believed that the world and the sun had been created and destroyed four times in the past. 

Under the first sun, a race of giants roamed the world. This world ended when a jaguar devoured the giants. The world under the second sun was swept away by a great wind. People under the third sun died in the fire and ash of volcanoes. Those living under the fourth sun drowned in floods.
