The study of weather
Meteorology
A force exerted onto a surface by the weight of air molecules
Pressure
Moisture falling from the atmosphere as rain, snow, or hail
Precipitation
The study of the ocean and all those critters in there
Oceanography (well, the critters in there would technically be termed Marine Biology...that's chapter 12)
The part of the atmosphere where one would find most of our satellites.
Thermosphere
The layer of our atmosphere where most of the weather occurs
Troposhpere
The layer of our atmosphere where one can find airlines flying about
Stratosphere
The layer of our atmosphere where many meteors burn up.
Mesosphere
Describe the difference between weather and climate and give and example
local and daily vs a region or long lasting characteristic
If you had a conatiner of air and heated it up, would tyhe pressure increase or decrease?
Increase...because it's like increase molecular motion
Why must there me dust in the air or other particles for water to condense?
Needs to latch on to something to go from gas to liquid state
The atmosphere is divided into two major regions. They are the _________ and _________.
Heterosphere and Homosphere
If you were very brave an went for a swim (holding your breath, of course) to the bottom of the Mariana trench (like its an area caused by tectonic plate subduction), you wouldn't have to worry about which of the following: intense pressure, extreme cold, Mr Crabs, intense light.
Intense light. Like its dark down there.
Air moves from a region of ________ pressure to a regio of _________ pressure.
High to low (lookout below)
An under the sea earthquake may cause this (lookout Patrick!)
A tsunami
What caused lightning?
Static from particles rubbing onto one another
What causes thunder?
Breaking the sound barrier!
Low pressure areas are usually associated with which type of weather?
Cloudy skies, gloomy
Describe an isobar
A line connecting areas of equal pressure
How will wind move along an isobar? Along with it or perpendicular across it. Why?
Across it since the pressures will be different.
Why is Mauna Kea a taller mountain that Mt Everest?
OOOOOOOH, quien vive en la pina debajo la aqua? Bob esponge. OK enough of that but I assume you caught the under the water part.
Someone tells you that El Nino caused a cold winter and is causing global warming. Why would you tell them that this is incorrect?
El nino is cyclical and warm water which causes rain in Soutth West US. La Nina is colder water which would cause opposite and ENSO and others are cyclical.
Meteorologists must have these five characteristics of air to predict the weather.
Temperature
Pressure
Humidity
wind direction
wind speed
Which type of weather front is usually associated with an advancing cold front in the summertime?
Cold front
Describe an occluded front
"Y" shaped. three fronts merge (one overtakes the others. Weather is usually not so good.
