What is volume?
What is: the amount of space an object or a substance takes up.
What is the density definition and equation?
Density is the amount of mass in a given amount of space
D = M / V
Density = Mass (g) divided by Volume (mL)
Density unit = g/mL
What is the unit for temperature used in the metric system (SI)
What is: Degrees Celsius
What axis is the independent variable on a graph?
What is: x-axis
What equipment can help us find volume?
What is: A ruler or a graduated cylinder
Find the density of both objects:
Object 1: Mass = 14g, Volume = 7cm^3
Object 2: Mass = 55g, Volume = 5cm^3
Which object would sink farther to the bottom of a cup of water compared to the other?
What is:
Object 1: 2 g/cm^3
Object 2: 11 g/cm^3
Object 2 will sink farther to the bottom because it is more dense.
What is the definition of length?
What is: The distance between two points
How many centimeters are in 3 meters?
What is: 300 cm
What are the two units for volume that we focused on?
What is: cm^3 and mL
What is the volume of a marble that has a mass of 10g and a density of 5g/mL?
What is: 2 mL
Name both pieces of equipment we learned can measure mass and state the unit.
What is: Triple beam balance and digital scale. Grams (g)
What equipment can be used to determine how much time has passed?
What is: a watch, a clock, or a stopwatch
How do you find the volume of a rectangular solid?
What is: V=LxWxH
Explain why ice (which is a solid) floats on water instead of sinking like most solids.
What is: The structure of the solid ice molecules are more spaced out than liquid water, making the ice less dense and, therefore, able to float
Explain the difference between Mass and Weight
What is: Mass is the amount of matter in an object and weight is the amount of gravity acting on an object.
15.2 kg is equal to how many milligrams?
What is: 15,200,000 mg
Explain how you find the volume of an irregularly shaped object.
What is: Determine the amount of water in the graduated cylinder. Place the object into the graduated cylinder and note how much the water is displaced in the graduated cylinder. Subtract both numbers to get the volume of your irregularly shaped object.
If there is an oil spill (large amounts of oil accidentally released into a body of water) why does the oil stay on top of the water?
What is: The oil is less dense than water
Fun fact: salt water is denser than fresh water
What is the difference between Area and Perimeter? Include the equation for both.
What is: Area is the amount of space on an object (A=LxW), whereas, perimeter is the distance around the edge of the shape (Add all sides together: 2L+2W)
What is the order of the conversion chart? (note: think of the saying)
K, H, D, U, D, C, M
