What happens during Confession?
You ask the priest for forgiveness, and as the priest blesses you, you make the Sign of the Cross and say when your last confession was. Then you reflect with an examination of conscience, which is when you think about the bad things you have done and the good things you have not done. You tell the priest that you are sorry, and you decide never to commit these sins again. This turning away from sin is called repentance. Then the priest will say "NAME, I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" which frees you of your sins. God has forgiven you and when you walk out of the confession room, you can start over, as if you had never sinned. After the confession, you immediately do the penance that the priest gave you.

He may not even tell the police about a murder that was confessed to him.
