Gram (+) cocci in clusters
Staph. aureus
Gram (-) and causes Acute rheumatic fever
Strep. pyogenes
Diplococci that causes meningitis
Neisseria meningitidis
Causes Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) and invades via M cells
Shigella
Anaerobic, rod shape and causes diarrhea
Clostridium diff.
diplococci that causes pneumonia
Strep. pneumo
Causes “walking pneumonia” and elevated LDH
Mycoplasma pneumo.
Responsible for most duodenal ulcers and produces urease
H. pylori
Causes flaccid paralysis (floppy baby syndrome) via decreased acetylcholine release
Clostridium botulinum
Beta hemolytic associated with neonatal meningitis
Group B strep (Strep. agalactiae)
Causes epiglottis and “thumb sign” on X-ray.
Haemophilus influenzae
Patient presents with diarrhea and a strange measure of 2/5 strength in their lower extremities. The pathology seems to be associated with Schwann cells
Campylobacter jejuni
Beta hemolytic and can cause a migratory polyarthritis
Strep. pyogenes
Gram (+) and novobiocin sensitive
Staph. epidermis
Alpha hemolytic and optochin resistant
Strep. viridians
Virulent factor is via antigenic variation of pili. Seen in patients with terminal complement deficiency
Neisseria meningitidis
Can cause very specific right lower quadrant pain. Also its genus was responsible for the bubonic plague in the 1300s
Yersinia
Associated with neonatal meningitis, rod shape and exhibits tumbling motility. Movement through actin polymerization. Can be acquired via deli meats
Listeria
Gram (+) and novobiocin resistant. Also linked to UTIs.
Staph. saprophyticus
Causes a rash that starts distally (palms and soles) and spreads to the center of body
Rickettsia
Crazy amounts of flecked-watery stools. Very INTENSE. ABNORMAL. Via increase in cAMP
Vibrio cholera
