Rewrite in standard form:

2 hundred and 2 thousandths

200.002

100

Rewrite the numbers in standard form on your place value chart, circle the greater number then compare using    <    or    >    or     =

4 X 103 +  2  X 100  +  3  X   0.1

4  x 1000  +  2  x 102  +  3  X  1/10

4200.3   =  4200.3

100

Write thirty six and forty two hundredths in standard form on your place value chart, and then

X  103

and explain the change in the value of the digits

36,420

The digits shifted 3 places to the left because we multiplied by 103,  which is 1000. The value of the digits became 1000 greater.

100

Convert 1.3 meters  to cm  (centimeters)

* (1 meter = 100 cm)

Write the equation, using an exponent, and solve.

1.3m  X 102 =  130 cm

200

Rewrite in standard form:

seventeen tenths

Rewrite the numbers in standard form on your place value chart, circle the greater number, then compare using    <  or   >   or    =

24 tenths

Write this number in standard form on your place value chart:

3 ten-thousands 6 thousands 4 hundreds 2 tens

then divide it by 102

explain the shift in the digits & the change in value

364.2

The digits shifted two places to the right because we divided by 102, which is 100.  The value of the digits became 100 times less (1/100) than they were.

200

Convert  0.67 m to cm (centimeters)

* (1 meter  = 100 cm)

Write the equation, with an exponent, and solve.

0.67m X 102  = 67 cm

300

Rewrite in standard form:

8 X 100  +  4  X 1  + 3 X 1/10  +  5 X 1/1000

804.305

300

Rewrite each number in standard form on your place value chart, circle the greater number, then compare using either <   or   >   or    =

20.31

2 tens 3 tenths 1 thousandth

20.31  >  20.301

300

Rewrite this number in standard form on your place value chart:

three hundred sixty four and two tenths

then multiply by 1000 and explain the shift, change in value and the number of zeroes

364,200

Multiplying by 1000 shifts the digits three places to the left and the value of each digit becomes 1000 times greater than it was. There are two zeroes because there were two places left blank when the digits were shifted (the tens and ones places).

300

Convert 4.13 m to mm (millimeters)

* (1 meter = 1000 mm)

Write the equation, with the exponent, and solve.

4.13 m X  103  = 4130 mm

400

Rewrite in word form (how do you SAY this number?):

2.612

two and six hundred twelve thousandths

400

Put the following numbers in decreasing order:

3.06     3.006      3.6      3.62

Decreasing means from largest to smallest-

3.62     3.6     3.06     3.006

400

Which of these numbers WOULD become 9.4 when rounded to the nearest tenth?  (Check them all because there may be more than one!)

9.333       9.415       9.435        9.388

9.415

9.435

9.388

400

Rewrite this number in standard form on your place value chart

three hundred sixty four thousand two hundred

then divide it by 104 and explain the shifts and change in value of the digits

36.42

The digits shifted 4 places to the right because we divided by 104 and the exponent 4 means 4 "jumps". The digits became 10,000 times less (1/10000).

400

Convert 0.725 m to mm (millimeters)

* (1 meter = 1000 mm)

Write the equation, using an exponent, and solve

0.725 m X  103  =  725 mm

500

Rewrite in expanded form (you can choose either decimals or fractions):

23.085

2 X 10  +  3  X  1  +  8  X 0.01  +  5  X 0.001

OR

2  X 10  + 3  X 1  +  8  X 1/100  + 5  X 1/1000

500

Put the following numbers in increasing order:

41.42     41.204     41.04     41.4

Increasing order means from smallest to largest -

41.04     41.204     41.4     41.42

500

Which of these would become 6.8 when rounded to the nearest tenth? (Check them all because there may be more than one!)

6.88          6.76          6.74        6.81

6.76

6.81

500

Explain the relationship between places on the place value chart that are next to each other.

Each place is 10 times greater than the place to its right. For example, the 10s place is 10 times greater than the 1s place...

Each place is 10 times less than the place to its left. (This is the same as "each place is 1/10 of the place to its left)" For example, the 10s place is 1/10 of the 100s place.

500

Write the equation, with an exponent and solve. You have to write a complete sentence answer!  Don't forget the units!!

The oldest tree in North America grows 2.07cm each year. How much will the tree grow by the year 2121? (How many years is that from this year?) Double pts: convert the answer to meters.

2.07  X  102  =  207cm

By the year 2119 the tree will have grown 207 cm.

*(100 cm = 1m)

207 cm divided by 102  = 2.07m

By the year 2119 the tree will have grown 2.07m
