Maya frowned, tears welling up in her eyes. Leo looked miserable. He immediately got his own allowance money, still sticky from his piggy bank, and offered it to her. "I'm so sorry, Maya.  A Short Passage: "The Smallest Tree"

All the trees in the forest were competing to grow the tallest. The oak trees shot up quickly, bragging about their shade. The pine trees focused only on reaching the sun, ignoring everything below. Tucked in a rocky corner, the smallest sapling couldn't grow as fast. Instead of straining upward, it spent its energy sending roots deep into the difficult soil. When a terrible summer drought hit the forest, the tall, shallow-rooted trees withered and drooped. The smallest tree, secure in its deep foundation, remained healthy and green. It had survived the hardest time of the year.

Read the passage below and answer the following question: how does the author use the characters' thoughts to create suspense or reveal information?

The school bell rang, signaling the end of the day. Sarah gathered her books quickly; she was already thinking about the warm cookies waiting for her at home. Across the room, Mr. Harrison sighed. He hoped the students hadn't found the secret note he'd left on the whiteboard, though he knew Jake had spotted it already. Jake stuffed the paper into his backpack, certain he was the only one who knew about the surprise field trip.

The author uses thoughts to reveal the secret (the note and the field trip) and to create dramatic irony. The reader knows two things the characters don't: Mr. Harrison knows Jake saw the note, and Jake thinks he's the only one who knows. This makes the reader wonder what will happen next!
