An object will float when its weight is less than the force of the water pushing on it. Light objects will float because they have low weight.

Objects sink when their weight is greater than the push from the water. Smaller, denser items will sink because they don't touch enough water to push them up.

Sometimes objects can look the same on the outside, but float differently. For example, cans of diet soda will float in water but regular soda cans will sink!

Objects may float or sink depending on their weight even if they look similar.
