Women fought as soldiers.

Ukraine has long been a territory desired by the countries that surrounded it. Ukraine being surrounded by almost all sides makes it fitting that the name for the country means "borderland". However, its other meaning is just as fitting when you consider how desired Ukraine is to other countries.

Rasputin was loved by the common people and Tsar Nicholas II listening to Rasputin was probably one of the few things the everyday Russian citizen appreciated of their Tsar. They did not, however, appreciate that he tried and failed to lead the Russian army during WWI.

Japan was hungry for power and expansion before, during and after WWI. It moved into other countries and took over, building up a strong military. However, Japan wanted to unite with the Allies for trade purposes, but in order to do so had to give in to the demands of the Allies which included cutting back on their military spending, so they'd seem less like a treat.

While the assassination was the trigger to the war, it would have remained between only Austria-Hungary and Serbia if it wasn't for the alliances that pulled in almost all of Europe. This makes the alliances the key ingredient to the first World War.

Under the rule of the British Empire, India would face many atrocities. One of the worst things done by Britain to the peaceful people of India was the slaughter of hundreds of innocent men, women, and children. This massacre would eventually gain international attention and cause Britain to loss its "crown jewel". 

This was the Amritsar Massacre.

This horrible event in history has two names. To the world it's known as the Amritsar Massacre. During this event the general Dyer of the British Empire blocked in and slaughtered over three hundred people who were simply protesting peacefully to the British occupation of their lands.

This person was one of the most notable past rulers of Ukraine. Their statues, which have stood in prominent places throughout Ukraine, are currently being taken down and moved to a museum where they'll stand as reminders of Ukraine's history and not its future.

Italy decided to changed sides during the first World War for several reasons, one of which was what?

They wanted to be on the winning side.

They wanted to acquire more land from their allies.

Italy wasn't sure who would be the winner, though after several additional countries joined the Triple Entente it was almost certain the Allies would win. However, Italy did want to regain land lost during their history that was currently occupied by Germany and Austria-Hungary (their own allies in the Triple Alliance). To regain this land after the defeat of their old allies was one reason they switched sides during WWI.

The British Empire was large before, during, and after WWI. However, after the war it became harder to control their territories as they suffered heavy economic blows during WWI. Catherine the Great was on a mission to make Ukraine into a "little Russia" and in her attempts to do so made it illegal to learn the language or publish works in the language. As well as push Russian cultures on the people in attempts to erase Ukrainian culture. Luckily, none of this worked and Ukraine is now pushing Russian culture and language out of Ukraine.

Leon Trotsky was a follower of Vladimir Lenin who believed in the teachings of his mentor and would have followed his path for Russia. However, Joseph Stalin quickly pushed Trotsky from Russia and ultimately killed him in his path to becoming Russia's new dictator.
