A structural changes in the tissue caused by damage or injury. Any mark, wound or irregularity is described as a lesion.
What is a lesion?
Accumulation of material on the skin surface, such as a crust or scab, or by depressions in the skin surface, such as an ulcer.
What is secondary skin lesion?
A chronic condition that appears primarily on the cheeks and nose. Characterized by flushing redness and in some cases symptoms can progress to pustular-type breakouts that ca be confused with acne.
What is rosacea
A rare genetic condition characterized by the absence of melanin pigment in the body, including in the skin, hair, and eyes.
What is Albinism
A recurring viral infection that often presents as a fever blister or cold sore, although many people have no symptoms. The blister usually appear on the lips, nostrils, or other part of the face, and the sores can last up to three weeks.
What is Herpes simplex 1
A flat spot or discoloration on the skin. Examples are freckle or age spot.
What is a macule?
Skin sore or abrasion produced by scratching or scraping. Nail cuticle damage from nail biting is an example.
What is excoriation
is a non inflamed build up of cells, sebum, and other debris inside follicles.
What is open comedo
Is a malformation of the skin due to irreglular pigmentation or dilated capillaries. Nevus is also known as birthmark
What is Nevus.
A skin disease characterized by red patches covered with silver-white scales and is usually found on the scalp, elbows, knees, chest, and lower back.
What is Psoriasis
Raised, inflamed, papule with a white or yellow center containing pus in the top of the lesion.
What is a pustule?
Crack in the skin that penetrates the dermis. Severely cracked and/or chapped hands, lips, or feet are examples of fissure.
What is fissure
A large, protuding pocket-like lesion filled with keratin. Sebaceous cysts are frequently seen on the scalp and the back and my be surgically removed by a dermatologist.
What is a sebaceous cyst
Is a condition characterized by hyperpigmentation on the skin in spots that are not elevated and is generally caused by cumulative exposure or aging.
What is Chloasma
An acquired, superficial, thickened patch of epidermis.
What is keratoma
Abnormal mass varying in size, shape, and color. Any type of abnormal mass. Requires medical referral. Example would be cancer.
What is a tumor?
A thick scar resulting from excessive growth of fibrous tissue. Example is a thick raised scar
What is keloid.
A closed follicle, not exposed to the environment - its sebum remains a white or cream color.
What is a closed comedo or whitehead
Is a skin disorder characterized by light, or white irregular patches caused by a burn a scar, inflammation, or a congenital disease that destroys the pigment producing cells.
What is Leukoderma
Excessive sweating caused by heat, genetics, stress, medications, or general body weakness. It requires a medical diagnosis and treatment.
What is Hyperhidrosis
Closed, abnormally developed sac that contains pus, semifluid, or morbid matter, above or below the skin. Requires medical referral.
What is a Cyst and/or tubercle? A cyst can be drained. A Tubercle cannot be drained.
Thick, dry, or oily plate of epidermal flakes. Examples of scale is excessive dandruff, and psoriasis.
What is scale
A skin condition caused by an inflammation of the sebaceous glands, and is often characterized by redness, dry or oily scaling, crusting, and/or itchiness.
What is seborrheic dermatitis. The red, flaky skin often appears in the eyebrows and beard, in the scalp and hairline, at the middle of the forehead, and along the sides of the nose.
Lentigines is the technical term for freckles. Small yellow-colored or brown-colored spots on skin exposed to sunlight and air.
What is Lentigines
An inflammatory, uncomfortable, and often chronic disease of the skin. It is characterized by moderate to severe inflammation, scaling, and sometimes severe itching.
