Mason chased Arik, Morgan and Eli up to a canyon, when Mason points an arrow at Morgan. Mahihkan, a wolf they had previously met, jumps on Mason and they both fall into the canyon.
How and why did Morgan and Eli go into the past?
Eli was being bullied, and Morgan had recieved contact information of her birth mother. Overcome with emotion, they decide they want to visit Ochek. They fake being sick to stay home from school, and open the portal to the past using one of Eli's drawings.

With the help of the seven Bird Warriors they would stand up to Muskwa, instead of fleeing and letting him destroy their village. In the end, Muskwa was very injured, but spared by Ochek.

They built a sweat lodge from a willow tree and Morgan entered with a sage offering for Eli's soul.

They found a piece of torn fabric near the portal that belonged to Mason (from the Barren Grounds) and realised his entrance to Misewa was their fault.

Working together, Morgan, Arik, Emily and Mahihkan lured the huge mother groundling out of the ground, and set her up to eat Mistapew.
