What is the difference between a sound and a syllable?
Syllables have vowels in them. Syllables are a way to break up a word into chunks. Words can be broken up by sounds (letters) instead of chunks.

How can we tell if a vowel will be long or short when we are reading?
We will have a long vowel if two vowels are placed together or a word ends in "e". For example Pie we hear the long "i" and Phone we hear a long "o".
