Real Life Levers
100
What's something that wheels and rollers have in common?
The both move things. They are both round.
100
What is a gear?
A toothed wheel
100
The mass lifted by the pulley is called the...
Load
100
Which class is a teeter totter?
First class lever
100
Where is the fulcrum on a pair scissors?
The middle
200
What's something that is different between wheels and rollers?
Wheels have axles and rollers do not. We need at least 2 wheels to go far but need many more rollers. Wheels are short cylinders and rollers are long cylinders.
200
If you have two gears, and turn one gear to the right, which direction will the other gear turn?
Left
200
What is the pulling force to lift the load called?
Effort
200
Name the class of a fishing rod
Third class lever
200
Where is the effort on a pair of tweezers?
The middle
300
What are some school supplies you can use as rollers?
Pencils, markers, glue sticks, pens, crayons, etc.
300
The wheel or gear that we turn is called...
The driver?
300
Give an example of a pulley in real life
A flagpole, garage door, tree house, crane, sailboat, wishing well, etc...
300
What are the three parts of a lever?
Effort, load, fulcrum
300
Name a third class lever
Catapult, fishing rod, hammer, tweezers, etc
400
Where is the best place for an axle in a wheel?
The center so the wheel turns smoothly
400
How do belts work?
By transferring movement and force from one wheel to another
400
Why is it easier to lift a heavy load with a pulley? (Think about the effort direction)
We pull down on the rope instead of lifting the load straight up. This makes it feel easier to us.
400
Give an example of a second class lever
Wheelbarrow
400
Should the fulcrum be closer to the load or the force when you want to lift an object?
Closer. The closer the fulcrum is to the load, the less effort needed to lift an object.
500
Name 3 rollers found in every day life
Tape dispenser, rolling pin, paper towel rolls, paint roller, toilet paper rolls, roller machine (construction), etc...
500
If you have a small gear and a larger gear, which gear will have more rotations?
The smaller gear
500
Name the parts of a pulley and explain how it works
Rope, wheel, effort, load. The rope goes in the groove of the wheel. One end is attached to the load while the other end is where we pull on it (effort). The rope rotates the wheel when pulled and lifts the load.
500
What are the two possible classes of hammers?
Class 1 and class 3 lever
500
Name a real world example of a class-1, class-2 and class-3 levers
Teeter-totter (class-1), wheelbarrow (class-2) and catapult(class-3). Other examples may be given.
