Attraction

The pull between two objects / substances.

100

The __________ of a substance are determined by the __________ of its molecules.

Properties

100

What happens when Oil and Vinegar are put in the same cup?

They don't mix / Their molecules do not attract to each other

100

What is the 1st rule and step of writing a Scientific Explanation?

It answers a question about how or why something happens.

Restate the question.

100

Why did the food coloring separate into different dyes?

Because the molecules of the different color attract differently to the molecules of the water. Allowing them to be able to separate.

200

Property

What you can observe or measure about something that helps you identify or describe it

An attribute, quality, or characteristic of something.

200

When the molecules of a solid are / aren’t attracted to the molecules of a liquid, they spread apart and mix together evenly.

Are

200

What does it mean when the 2 molecules have a low attraction to each other?

They are not able to mix.

200

What is the 2nd rule and step of writing a Scientific Explanation?

It describes things that are not easy to observe.

Make your claim.

200

What is chromatography?

Chromatography is a process for separating components of a mixture. In our case, the process of separating a mixture of food coloring.

300

Soluble

Able to dissolve in water or another liquid

300

When the molecules of a solid are / aren’t attracted to the molecules of a liquid, they stay clustered together as a solid.

Aren't

300

What does it mean when 2 molecules have a high attraction to each other?

They are able to mix.

300

What is the 3rd rule and step of writing a Scientific Explanation?

It is based on the ideas you have learned from investigations and text.

Provide evidence.

300

Why do some salad dressings have sediments, and others do not?

Because not all salad dressing ingredients are soluble in oil and vinegar.

400

Emulsifier

Emulsifiers are food additives used to help mix two substances that typically separate when they are combined.

400

When the molecules of two different liquids are attracted to one another, they _____________ and become evenly distributed in the mixture.

Cluster together

400

Explain what happens at the nanoscale level when Emulsifiers are added to Oil and Vinegar.

The molecules of the emulsifier attract to the molecules of the oil and vinegar. Making them able to mix.

400

What is the 4th rule and step of writing a Scientific Explanation?

It uses scientific language.

Provide reasoning for the evidence.

400

When a substance dissolved in a liquid, does it still exist in the liquid? Why or why not.

Yes. Even though we can't see it, the substance is still there. For example, sugar in water. After evaporating the mixture of sugar and water, we can clearly see the sugar at the bottom of the cup. Also, if we were to taste the mixture it would taste sweeter because the sugar is in the water.

500

Miscible Liquids

Liquids that are able to fully mix and form one solution.

500

Molecules of an __________ attract the molecules of two liquids that do not typically mix, allowing the molecules of the __________ and of the liquids to mix.

Emulsifier

500

Why can salad-dressing separate after being mixed?

Because the molecules of the two ingredients have a low attraction to each other but a high attraction to themselves.

500

What is the 5th rule and step of writing a Scientific Explanation?

It is written for an audience.

Conclusion.

500

List the 4 models that can be used as evidence for your scientific explanation.
