He modernized the country. He improved agriculture, industry and trade. He reformed education and built libraries and museums. He recovered Menorca as a Spanish territory.

His favourite was conde-duque de Olivares. Spain fought in the Batalla de los 30 años, between Catholics and Protestants. Spain lost many territories in Europe.
He did many reforms, he also built roads and canals. It was a reign of peace.

The manual work was dishonorable. People with money did not invest and the country did not prosper or develop. There was no industry or manufacturing, so Spain did not grow economically.

Carlos II died without children. So many European monarchies fought to take over the Spanish Empire in the Guerra de Sucesión. After the war the Bourbon dynasty ruled in Spain.
