Read the following paragraph. What type of text structure is this? What evidence do you have to support this? My family and I went to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The first thing we did when we got there was to take a tour of a space shuttle that once flew into space. During our tour, an astronaut showed us her spacesuit. I even got to try on the space boots. Next, we tasted the food astronauts eat while they are in space. It was really different from other foods that I had eaten but it tasted pretty good. Finally, we got in a special booth that showed us what it is like to be weightless! It was an amazing day. Chronological ( Sequence) Evidence: The words first, during, next and finally tell in what order the events happened. Steps or order of what family did on a tour Not cause and effect, compare and contrast or problem and solution.

Read the following paragraph(s). What type of text structure is this? What evidence do you have to support it? In the early 1800s, the United States needed room to grow. The problem was most people lived in the East. The cities were crowded. New land was expensive. Young families couldn’t afford to buy farms. Then, as a solution, the United States government purchased land from France. The government also acquired land from Mexico. Soon the country stretched all the way to the Pacific Ocean. People looked to the setting sun with outstretched arms and said, “Go west!” Problem and Solution Possible Evidence: The word problem appears in the first paragraph and indicates that the cities in the eastern United States were crowded and land was expensive. The solution follows the problem and is indicated by the word solution in the second paragraph. The United States government acquired more land to the west and people built small towns on this new land.

What type of account is the following, what evidence supports this? A food chain is a link between plants and animals. It starts with a plant. The next part of the link is a plant eater. When the prairie plants were uprooted, the animals that depended on them lost their food source. So while the farmers produced more food for people, they broke the animals’ food chain. For example, if a bird needs seeds to eat and the plant is gone, that bird will not be able to survive. And the animals that ate that bird won’t have any food, either.

Cause and Effect Evidence: The words as a result, because, and one reason help to determine what caused something to happen. For example, when people moved onto the land where the deer lived, the result or effect was the deer started to roam in the city. Another example is when the students write that they have adopted the deer as a project, they state that one reason is that the deer can run in front of cars. The fact that the deer or drivers can be harmed was one cause for adopting the deer as a project. Therefore this passage uses the cause and effect text structure to present ideas. Read the following paragraph. What type of text structure is it? What evidence supports this? Sometimes humans change an ecosystem without meaning to. It’s that way in my town, Oakville. Recently, many new homes were built in a wooded area of the city. People moved onto the land where deer and other wild animals lived. As a result, the only place the deer could roam was in the city. Early in the morning, it’s not unusual to see deer walking down the middle of the main street. They wander in people’s yards looking for plants to eat. It can be dangerous for drivers because the deer can run in front of cars. That’s one reason our class has adopted the deer as a project. We’re writing to ask city council to leave some wooded areas for the deer.

Read the following paragraph(s). What type of text structure is this an example of? What evidence do you have to support this? Two of the most destructive hurricanes to hit the United States in recent years were Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Both hurricanes inflicted massive destruction and damage to parts of the southeast United States. When Hurricane Andrew made landfall in Homestead, Florida, it was a category 5 hurricane—the strongest measure for hurricanes. At landfall its winds measured 175 miles per hour and it dumped seven inches of rain on southern Florida. With storm surges nearly 17 feet, the damage was extensive. Estimated property damage was $25 billion and 26 people died as a result of the hurricane. Hurricane Katrina struck the Mississippi and Louisiana coast as a category 3 hurricane with winds of 120 miles per hour at landfall. Although Katrina was not as strong as Andrew, it was far more destructive and deadly. This is because the city of New Orleans was in its path. A storm surge of 12 feet reached the city and caused the protective levees to break, flooding 80% of the city. More than 1,800 people died and property damage was about $81 billion Compare and Contrast Evidence: Key words- both, far more, stronger of the two similarities and differences of two hurricanes. Identify the structure of #1 and #2 then compare how they are similar and different. #1Beep Baseball is a lot like baseball. They both use a ball and bases, and both have two teams. The players use a bat to hit the ball. Unlike players on baseball teams, the players on Beep Baseball teams are sighted and non-sighted people. The sport is played with a big ball and a big bat. There are only two bases, which look like soft towers. When a batter hits a ball, one of the bases begins to beep loudly. The batter runs toward the sound. If the batter can reach the base before someone throws a ball to the base, his or her team scores a point. #2 The Plains Indians lived in North America before the Europeans came. Since they had no horses, the Plains Indians traveled on foot. To hunt buffalo, they would surround a herd and shoot the buffalo with bows and arrows. This changed when Spanish explorers came to North America and brought horses with them. Now the Plains Indians hunters were able to ride horses and follow buffalo over long distances. They carried tipis with them and set up camps. The hunters could kill buffalo and pull them back to camp using their horses. Later, guns again changed the way that Plains Indians hunted
