What is Light?
What is light?
An electromagnetic wave that carries radiant energy.
Explain the electromagnetic spectrum.
Different types of energy that don’t need a medium;
Define wavelength.
Crest to crest or trough to trough.
What happens during transmission?
Light goes through the material.
If you want to stay cool on a sunny day, which color t-shirt should you wear?
white
What is electromagnetic radiation?
Energy of different types that move through empty space (they don’t need a medium).
Name two types of energy in the EM spectrum.
Radio, Micro, Infrared, light, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma.
Define amplitude.
Midpoint to crest or midpoint to trough.
What happens during reflection?
Light bounces off the surface.
If you wanted a gift to be a surprise, what kind of container would you put it in?
A. transparent B. opaques C. Translucent
transparent
What is a wave?
A disturbance (vibration) that moves energies from place to place.
What is a medium?
Something a wave moves through.
What is a crest?
The top of a wave.
What happens during absorption?
Light gets stuck inside and often converts to heat.
Sam shines a flashlight on his hand, a coffee filter, glass, and wax paper. Using an app on his iPad he measures the amount of light that comes through each object to determine if it is opaque, translucent or transparent. What is Sam's independent variable? 4.P.4A.5
the object he shines the light through
What is radiant energy?
light energy
How does light interact with matter?
Transmission - light goes through it; Reflection - light bounces off; Absorption - light gets stuck inside (heat); Refraction - light bends because of different mediums.
What is a trough?
The bottom of a wave.
What happens during refraction?
Light bends because of different mediums.
What color reflects the most radiant energy?
White reflects the most; black absorbs the most.
What is the difference between electromagnetic waves and mechanical waves?
EM waves don’t need a medium, but mechanical waves need something to move through (medium).
Draw an electromagnetic wave and label it.
draw and label wavelength, crest, trough, and amplitude.
Define frequency.
Number of waves in a period of time.
Describe transparent, translucent, and opaque.
Transparent - see-through; Translucent - kinda see-through; Opaque - transmits no light.
Jenny wants to prank her sister, Cynthia. She completely covers Cynthia's bedroom door with plastic wrap. The plan is that when Cynthia gets up, she'll open her door and get stopped by the plastic wrap. Jenny thought that Cynthia wouldn't see the plastic wrap since it's transparent, and left the hall light on so she could watch and laugh. As soon as Cynthia opened the door, she saw some light reflect on the plastic wrap and yelled at Jenny. What could Jenny do differently so that the plastic wrap isn't visible?
cut of the hall light
