What is the formula for Area?

Area = Length X Width
OR
Area = Width X Length

What equation does Ms. Stauffer want us to write down FIRST to help us figure out the side lengths and area?

____ X ____ = _____

Find the Area of Rectangle B:

15 square units. (3 x 5 = 15)

100

Find the Area:

2 x 8 = 16

What does the "W" and the "L" stand for in the Formula: A = W x L?

W= Width

L = Length

200

What is the width of the shaded rectangle?

4 ft.

Write and solve and equation to find the Area of Rectangle A:

5 x 6 = 30 square units

200

Find the area:

27 square inches

300

Does the "3 cm" represent the length or the width of the rectangle?

Width

300

Find the length of the rectangle:

3 square units

300

Write and solve and equation to find the area for the shaded rectangle:

8 x 4 = 32 square units

300

Find the area of Rectangle A:

36 square units (6 x 6 = 36)

400

Why can't I multiply 3m and 10m to get the area of the entire figure?

Because the figure is not a rectangle. The formula Area = Length X width is only for rectangles and squares. So, you need to figure out the area of each rectangle first and then add them all up to find the area of the entire figure.

Ms. Stauffer glues 3 identical pieces of paper together to form the square below. Find the missing width for the 1 piece of paper.

3 cm. (The total width of the 3 identical pieces of paper together = 9 so 9 divided by 3 pieces of paper = 3).

Find the Area of Rectangle A

7 x 4  = 28 square units

400

Find the area of the shaded figure:

Area of shaded figure is: 28 cm.

Area of Big Rectangle: 6 x 6 = 36
Area of Small Rectangle: 4 x 2 = 8

36 - 8 = 28.

What is Area?

Area is the amount of space inside of a figure.

What are the unknown side lengths of the unshaded rectangle below?

the length is 5 cm and the width is 4 cm.

Use the arrays below to find the pattern. Write and solve an equation to find the area of the array that would come next in the pattern. Draw a picture of it.

1st array: 2 x 2 = 4
2nd array: 3 x 3 = 9
3rd array: 4 x 4 = 16

The array that would come next would be: 5x5 = 25. There would be 5 columns with 5 square units in each row.

Find the area of the shaded figure:

52 square units

8 x 4 = 32

5 x 4 = 20

32 + 20 = 52 square units
