Plan a Chart
The horizontal axis in a chart, usually containing the names of data categories; also called the x-axis
What is a category axis?
An individual piece of data plotted in a chart.
What is a data point?
Small squares or circles at the corners of a selected object such as a chart, picture, or shape; dragging a sizing handle resizes the object; also called handle.
What are sizing handles?
In excel, an independent element on a worksheet (such as a chart or graphic) that is not located in a specific cell or range; can be moved and resized and displays handles when selected.
What is an object?
A pie chart that moves one slice away from the others as if someone were taking the piece away from the pie.
What is exploding?
In a chart, the area inside the horizontal and vertical axes that contains the graphical representation of the data series.
What is a plot area?
A graphical representation of a data point in a chart, such as a bar or column.
What is a data marker?
A column chart that displays data values in side by-side columns.
What is a clustered column chart?
A range of cells that shows the resulting values when one or more input values are varied in a formula; in a chart, a grid containing the chart data.
What is a data table?
A quick, simple chart located within a cell that serves as a visual indicator of data trends.
What is a sparkline?
The third axis in a true 3-D chart, lets you compare data points across both categories and values.
What is a Z-axis?
Data from a column or row in a sheet; the set of values represented in a chart.
What is a data series?
A chart displayed as an object in a worksheet.
What is an embedded chart?
A line that represents the general direction in a series of data.
What is a trendline?
In Excel, horizontal and vertical lines in a worksheet or chart that make it easier to read.
What is a gridline?
In a chart, information that identifies how data is represented using colors or patterns
What is a legend?
A separate sheet in a workbook that contains only a chart, which is linked to the workbook data.
What is a chart sheet?
In a chart, the axis that contains numerical values; in a 2-dimensional chart, also known as the y-axis.
