We Need Bees!

(1)Do you like apples? Thank a bee! Some people are afraid of bees, but we need them. Without bees, many of the world’s fruits, vegetables, and flowers would not be able to grow. We would not have oranges, pumpkins, almonds, blueberries, or nearly a hundred other foods and plants.

(2)How do bees help? Many of our foods come from flowering plants. Flowers have a sticky powder called pollen. The pollen in a flower needs to travel to the seed of another flower in order for a new plant to grow. Bees are pollinators. A pollinator is an animal or insect that carries pollen from one plant to another. Bees, bats, and butterflies are all pollinators. Without them, new plants could not grow.

(3)When a bee drinks nectar from a flower, pollen from the flower sticks to its legs. When the bee flies to the next flower, some of the pollen falls from the bee’s legs onto that flower. With that pollen, the flower’s seeds can make new plants. Without the important work of pollinators, flowering plants would disappear from the world.

(4)Sadly, today bees are in trouble. No one is sure why, but bees all over the world are disappearing from their hives.

(5)Some people think bees are getting sick from pesticides. Pesticides are used to kill insects that eat the plants we grow.

(6)Some people think bees are getting sick because they cannot find enough good food. As people use more land for building, there are fewer wild places left. Some of the bees’ food is disappearing.

(7)You can help bees!

  • Plant a garden of bee-friendly flowers.
  • Provide a birdbath or dish of water for thirsty bees.
  • Do not use pesticides.
  • Do not swat at bees. A bee will only sting to protect itself. Stay calm around bees and they will stay calm around you.

The author is trying to persuade the reader to help the bee population by planting gardens with water and try to remain calm and not hurt bees with pesticide.
