There were multiple families in one longhouse and one person in charge. This person was called a clan mother. By the name you have already probably figured out that a woman would be the clan mother. The clan mother was in charge of the longhouse and appointing chiefs. She also was able to take the title chief from others. Women were also the people who owned land and they were also the one that tended to the crops. Women gathered all the fruits and vegetables for the people of the longhouse. Women were also in charge of making clothing for their family.
