What is the population?
all monkeys at the zoo being fed this way with infinite choices
What is the sample?
a single monkey making 12 choices
Where are office hours held for my professor
MH 187 - (for professor jamshidi)
What is the sample I am collecting?
The 10 games that I observe
What is the variable of this investigation?
Whether we win or not
JUST USING WORDS, What is a potential hypothesis for this investigation/a potential answer to my research question (no need for null and alternative, just what do you think will happen)
monkeys understand inference and are more likely to get cooked potatoes during their observation period.
Is our variable categorical or quantitative? What, then, is our STATISTIC used to represent our data?
Categorical p̂
When is my first midterm
feb 27th
Will I be using pi or p-hat for my hypothesis? Does my hypothesis describe what is happening in the sample now or what I think will be the case for the long run
pi
What is the population?
All games for all of time between these teams
What is the observational unit?
Monkey (specifically the monkey who gets a potato)
What is the variable?
type of potato (cooked or raw)
What is the parameter and statistic for an investigation with categorical variables?
pi and p-hat
What is the observational unit?
+150 points if your answer is correct AND you can explain why
The observational unit is a game
How could I analyze my data (meaning what is my statistic and parameter and how could I find these)?
What is my alternative hypothesis?
Ha: p̂>.50 (monkeys do understand inference)
What is my null hypothesis
Ho:p̂=.50 (monkeys don't understand inference)
define sampling distribution
A distribution of all the test statistics of many different samples (usually simulated for our class)
Write the alternative hypothesis. To do this, think “what would I do with the results of 10 games, and how could I use this data to determine who is better through comparison?)
- Tell me in terms of Ho and Ha and also in words
Ha: pi>.50
In the long run, SF will win more games (more than half) than team Chiefs
Write the null hypothesis. To do this, think “what would I do with the results of 10 games, and how could I use this data to determine who is better through comparison?)
- Tell me in terms of Ho and Ha and also in words
H0: pi=0.50
SF is Not better
If our sample data is one monkey making 12 decisions, what specifically is our p-hat value representing? What is it the proportion of (aka how could we find it?)
-
Number of cooked potatoes/total dispensed
MUST answer coloumn 1 400 before this....
Why don’t we care about p<.50?
This is not going to happen. The least amount that they would get is .5 of the time. Although even if it were a possibility, thats not in our question. We just care if they can understand inference. Less than .5 would mean something else.
If i get confused on number sense confidence interval questions, what can I do to check my answer
(ex: as my MOE increases, does my confidence interval get broader or narrower)
+100 points if you have more than one way
I can plug in numbers
I can use Rguroo
We play our 10 games and its time to analyze the data….
4/10 wins for SF:
6-7/10 wins for SF:
9-10/10 wins for SF:
4/10 wins for SF: no evidence supporting Ha. H0 seems reasonable
6-7/10 wins for SF: some evidence supporting Ha. H0 seems reasonable
9-10/10 wins for SF: overwhelming evidence supporting Ha H0 seems unreasonable
There is less than a .05 chance that my results happened by random chance
