Why did God send the plagues to Egypt?

Moses was sent to Pharaoh to tell him to let God’s people go. Because Pharaoh was stubborn, God sent plagues on Egypt to convince Pharaoh to release the Israelites.

How could they prevent the 'death angel' from visiting their home?

They would kill a lamb without spot or defect and put the blood on their doorposts. That night, when the death angel passed over the Israelites’ homes and saw the blood, the death angel would not touch their children. Homes without the blood of the lamb would suffer the death of the firstborn.
