African Americans are less likely to be registered as bone marrow donors compared to individuals of other racial or ethnic backgrounds

Fact!

  1. Lack of Awareness: African Americans may be less aware of the importance of bone marrow donation and the need for diversity in donor registries.
  2. Cultural Barriers: Misconceptions or cultural beliefs about medical procedures and donation may deter African Americans from registering as bone marrow donors.
  3. Historical Distrust: Historical injustices and medical mistreatment experienced by African Americans contribute to distrust in the healthcare system, impacting donor registration rates.
  4. Access Barriers: Limited access to healthcare services, including donor registration events, may hinder African Americans from joining bone marrow registries.
  5. Representation Gap: The underrepresentation of African Americans in healthcare leadership and advocacy efforts may result in less targeted outreach and education about bone marrow donation.
