THE Assassination---- In the summer of 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne, was assassinated. Ferdinand was shot by a Serb nationalist (Gavrilo Princip- member of the Black Hand) while riding in a motorcade. It was the spark that ignited World War I.
