Define a physical property.
A physical property is a characteristic that you can observe without changing the composition.
100
What is a chemical property?
A chemical property is a characteristic that cannot be observed without altering the substance.
100
Define a physical change
A physical change is one in which the form or appearance of matter changes, but not its composition
100
What is a chemical change?
During a chemical change, substances are changed into difference substances. The composition of the substance changes.
100
What is the law of conservation of mass?
It states that the total mass of the matter is the same before and after a physical or chemical change.
200
Name three categories that physical properties can fall into.
Using your senses State of Matter Melting/Boiling Point Size Independent/Size Dependent Magnetic Properties
200
What are examples of Chemical Properties?
Ability to burn, Ability to tarnish, and Ability to rust.
200
What are three signs of a possible physical change?
1) changing shape - tearing a piece of paper, cutting fruit, bending a metal 2) Dissolving - sugar dissolving into water - The form of the sugar changes, but the substance remains as sugar. 3) Changing State - water to ice, condensation, vaporization
200
What are the 5 signs of a possible chemical change?
Color, Gain or Release of Energy, Odor, Production of a gas or a solid, the change is not easily reversed.
200
Why is "beautiful" not a physical characteristic?
When you are looking at a piece of art and name a physical characteristic as "beautiful" you are simply stating an opinion. This is NOT physical characteristic. Not everyone will have the same opinion.
300
Which physical properties are dependent on size?
mass, weight, and volume
300
How do physical and chemical properties differ?
A physical property can be observed without changing the composition of the object - A chemical property cannot be observed without altering the composition.
300
Explain why dissolving salt in watch is a physical change and not a chemical change.
Dissolving salt in water is a physical change because the salt is changing its form, but the composition is staying the same. In other words, the salt is no longer in small pieces, it is dissolved in the water. The salt is still salt. The salt does not change into a new substance just because it is in the water.
300
What is an example of energy released and an example of energy absorbed?
released - fireworks absorbed - cake batter baking into a cake
300
A jeweler bends gold into a gorgeous ring. What type of change is this? Explain!
Bending is a physical change because it does not change the composition of the gold.
400
Which properties are NOT dependent on size?
Density, melting/boiling point, solubility, ability to attract magnets, state of matter, color
400
Describe the physical properties of a baseball.
solid, spherical, white, smooth, red, other descriptions will work.
400
List 3 examples of a physical change
tearing paper, water freezing, playing with play dough, painting your bedroom wall, crumpling up a piece of paper, cutting fruit up, bending metal...answers will vary!
400
Explain what it means when we say "chemical changes are not easily reversed".
The substances produced in a chemical change cannot be changed back into the original substances by physical means. Example - When a log is burned, the results of the fire cannot be put back together to form the original log.
400
What is vaporization?
Vaporization is the change from a liquid to a gas.
500
Matter exists in 3 states. Name all three.
Solid, Liquid, Gas
500
Explain the difference between the physical and chemical properties of a match.
Physical - solid, tan, red, wood... Chemical - ability to burn - you must interact with the match in order to observe a chemical change.
500
What is the differences between physical and chemical changes.
A chemical change alters the composition of the matter, while a physical change alters appearance but not composition.
500
Describe how to conduct a physical and chemical change to tree.
Physical - wood carvers creating a statue out of the trunk. Chemical - Cut the tree into logs and burn it in a fire.
500
What is the change of a gas to a liquid?
This change is called condensation.
