The relationship between individual good and common good

The 3 essential elements of the common good are:

1. respect for the life and dignity of every human person

2. commitment to the social well being and development of the group, especially by ensuring the individuals' basic needs are met

3. establishment of a peaceful and just society

If individual good is not protected and provided for by community, then individual will be unable to provide, contribute to the community.

To do this though may require the sacrifice of the individual good for the common good.

You go, we go.  We are interconnected like a web. What affects one, affects all - for good or for bad.

500

CST as an alternative response to the struggles of life, using natural law

- define natural law - innate moral knowledge that seeks to preserve, develop and share human life

When life gets tough, we tend to isolate and focus only on self. This can lead to violations of natural law such as

Considering natural law leads to unity and the preservation, development and sharing of life, an alternative to selfishness when life gets tough would be selflessness. Instead of isolating, reach out for help - or even consider those who are in greater need and reach out to them, as seen in the CST themes of Solidarity and Option for the Poor and Vulnerable.

500

Using  Personalistic Norm to avoid playing God in a world of evolving technology and increasing focus on individual power

define Personalistic Norm - principle that MAINTAINS a person is to be treated as a unique individual - never a means to an end.

"maintains" meaning that, regardless of the circumstances (beginning of life or end of life issues) human life involves a person created in the image and likeness of God and is therefore sacred and full of dignity and should be treated as such - at ALL times, even when it may be inconvenient or uncomfortable, as in times when abortion or euthanasia is the "easier" solution from an individual perspective.

500

how to keep Church & State separate but still "vote one's conscience" as a faith-filled citizen.

- define conscience and how it is formed/informed

discuss how common good is achieved when each member is able to fully participate and contribute to society, i.e meeting responsibilities while rights are protected and upheld

Church teaching can help form/inform conscience on issues that affect common good

500

how practicing solidarity can "make the world a better place for all to live in it"

- define solidarity and tie to common good; interconnectedness

use MLK's speech about where our breakfast comes from or the philosophy of Ubuntu

contrast with the challenges of individualism and isolationism prevalent in today's society
