True or False: A school counselor teaches students about feelings and friendship skills.

TRUE! We will explore this and many other topics this year during our classroom guidance lessons.

100

What does confidentiality mean?

Confidentiality means keeping private information safe and private. (What I can keep a secret vs. what I can't keep a secret)

100

What is Mrs. Phillips' favorite sport to play?

Tennis

100

How do you see Mrs. Phillips?

Always ask your teacher first. Your teacher will walkie me to see if I'm available. Please do not just show up without permission. Keeping track of your whereabouts is part of keeping you safe!

200

Does Mrs. Phillips have any pets? If so, what kind?

I have 2 dogs - Finn (9) and Freya (2).

200

True or False: A counselor only talks to students who are in trouble.

FALSE! If students are called to my office that does not automatically mean they're in trouble. Often times, if you're called down it could be for a check in, to talk with you about a situation, to help you make better choices/learn from mistakes, etc.

200

True or False: A counselor can promise to keep everything you say a secret.

FALSE. Most of what you share with me can be kept secret. The only times I MUST involve another safe adult (like Mr. Demerest/Officer Kuca) is if there's a risk to your or someone else's safety. (if you're hurting yourself, someone's hurting you, you plan to hurt someone else).

200

Principal, teacher, counselor, resource officer, nurse, secretary, custodian, aides, resource teacher, speech etc.

You suspect someone cheated during a test. Who should you talk to first?

Your teacher

You had a big argument with your mom last night. There was a lot of yelling and today you're still feeling angry about it. You vent to Mrs. Phillips and tell her all the ways your mom is getting on your nerves. Is this something I HAVE to share or can I keep it a secret?

Keep secret. If your safety is not at risk and you just needed someone to vent to, I do not need to share what you shared with me.

300

Name 3 different coping skills.

Drawing, writing/journaling, using a fidget, taking deep breaths, practicing postive self-talk (postiive statements), coloring, taking a break, moving your body/stretching + more!

300

Someone did not let you join football at recess. Who should you talk to first?

Your teacher. If it continues to be an issue and you've already talked to your teacher, then come see me!

400

Where did Mrs. Phillips go to college?

West Liberty University & West Virginia University

400

True or False: The counselor's job is to make every problem go away

False — a counselor helps students learn different skills to handle problems. There's a lot I can help with, but there are always going to be things that are out of my control and yours! Sadly, I do not have a magic wand

:(

You and your friend can't seem to get along lately. There's always rumors that they're talking bad about you when you're not around. You share these details with Mrs. Phillips because you need help. Is this something I have to share or can it stay between us?

It can stay between us; however, when there's frequent problems with friends or classmates, I usually recommend us having a mediation to resolve it. I will usually ask your thoughts first, unless it's been disruptive to everyone's day.

400

Bullying is when someone  r________ uses their words or actions to hurt, scare, or leave someone out on _________.

repeatedly & on purpose

400

You're really concerned about your friend. She frequently cries to you at recess and tells you that things at home have been really difficult recently. Who should you talk to first?

Come see me! Part of being a good friend is knowing when to let an adult know that someone needs more help than you can provide.

500

How many years has Mrs. Phillips been at Warwood Elementary (counting this year)?

This is my 3rd year! I've been a counselor for 8 though.

500

Give 2 examples you might talk to your counselor about (no names or stories).

Do not just say "Feelings" - try to be specific.

Family/home life, friendship problems, bullying, anxiety, grief, organization, anger, concerns for another student, self-confidence, frustration, learning new coping skills, and so much more!

500

You woke up late, missed the bus, and forgot you had a math test this morning. You're nervous about the test, still frustrated about your bad morning and say "UGH I just want to die already!" Does Mrs. Phillips have to tell someone or can is it something that can be kept secret?

Have to tell.

Even if it's "just a joke" or said out of frustration, I am required to notify an adult at home. SAFETY is ALWAYS top priority!

500

Name 2 rules about using a fidget in the classroom?

If it's distracting to your or someone else, your teacher is allowed to take it away.

You're listening/working while using your fidget.

Your fidget should not make noises.

Your fidget should not touch others, be passed around, or thrown.

A student keeps making fun of another student at recess and has been doing it over and over. They've already mentioned it to your teacher. The student feels uncomfortable and doesn't know what to do. Who should they talk to?

It is always recommended to keep your teacher in the loop, especially where bullying behavior is concerned. Definitely reach out to either Mrs. Phillips or Mr. Demerest if you suspect someone is being bullied.
