What is the setting?
The sequence of events in a story.
What is plot?
The character is struggling with a problem in their own head.
What is internal conflict / character vs. self?
The reader knows the thoughts and feelings of one character, as told by an outside narrator.
What is third person limited?
She is as smart as a tack!

The moral, or life lesson, in the story. It's what the author wants the reader to learn.

The part of the story where the reader learns the "ever after".

The feeling the reader experiences when reading a text.

The character has a problem with one or more characters in the story.

The reader knows the thoughts and feelings of more than one character.
What is third person omniscient?
When given a task to complete, she is a dog with a bone. She won't stop until her job is done!
What is metaphor?
The part of the story where the main character meets the main conflict. It is the turning point of the story.
What is climax?
How the author feels about the subject they're writing about.

I was so nervous about taking my driving test that I had to throw up twice before I even left the house! My dad laughed at me and reminded me that he did the same thing on his sixteenth birthday!

What is hyperbole?
The part of the story where the main conflict is introduced. This gets the story rolling.
What is inciting incident?
Specific words chosen to hint to the reader what will happen later in the text.
What is foreshadowing?
The character struggles with a group, community, or society over rules, laws, or values.
What is character vs. society?
Cheyenne studied for hours the night before her big test. Imagine her surprise when she walked into class the next day and the teacher said, "I have a surprise for you. Today's test is cancelled!" She was so relieved that she couldn't contain the giggle that bubbled from deep in her chest.

My mom asked me not to spill the beans about my brother's surprise party. I thought it would be a piece of cake, but it turns out that it was harder than I thought. I ended up letting the cat out of the bag the next day!
