What is the policy regarding cellphones?

Cellphones should not be used in class unless teacher gives explicit permission. Students will receive one warning, asked to put phone away. Further violations will result in a student incident report, and lunch detentions and office referrals as needed.

In addition to our units of study, what can I expect from English coursework this year?

Preparation for the SAT including passages, writing, and vocab.

Visit a coach class! Ask to meet with Ms. O'Keefe! Ask questions! I'm here to help you.

What is the re-do policy? How many times can you re-do an assignment?

You fill out a request to re-do, and you only get one chance to re-do work.

What is the food and drink policy in Ms. O'Keefe's classroom?

Because of the technology we use, food and drink are not permitted in the class. Water is permitted, but cannot be out on your desk when using your device.

Explain the PBA for unit 1 of English.

For 9th grade: Write an essay examining the relationship between home and identity using information from Kindred as evidence.


For 11th grade: Design a television show to showcase growing up American based on your reading of The Other Wes Moore.

Can I work on a PBA outside of the classroom?

No! PBAs can only be worked on within the classroom.

Describe the quarterly pass system. How many passes do you get? Where are they stored? What happens if you lose yours?

Students are allowed four passes per quarter. You are responsible for returning your pass to the binder in the back of the room. Lost passes will not be replaced.

What is a major thematic focus of all units of study throughout the school year?

9th grade-- Themes of Identity and home plays a part in each of our units. H

11th grade--The American experience plays a part in each of our units.

What is Ms. O'Keefe's promise? What do students need to do in return?

Ms. O'Keefe will listen and support each of her students. She promises to respect and listen to you. She will work with you to make sure that you reach your goals. Students need to ask for support, put in work, and try their best!

If I want to re-do a learning check, I need to...

In order to re-do a learning check you must make up any missed work leading up to that learning check. Learning checks need to be redone before the PBA.
