People were spending money they didn't have. This gave many a load of debt they were not going to be able to pay back.

"Towns" made from scraps like cardboard boxes, newspaper, etc. made by those affected by the G.D. They were located near soup kitchens and resources they needed to live. They were called Hoovervilles because people often blamed President Hoover for the G.D.

1. Borrow money from the bank, Bank loans you money but you offer collateral in case you can't pay them back.
2. Stock Market crashed. Banks weren't going to get money back from people now!
3. The people ran to banks to withdrawl (take out) the money they had in savings before the banks would close and they weren't able to access it anymore.

What is an "Okie" Why are are they called that?
Okie is a person who was affected by the Dust Bowl. Many moved to California in search of a better (safer) life and hopefully to find work. They are called Okies because the Dust Bowl primarily took place in Oklahoma, but NOT all Okies were from Oklahoma.
What does Laissez-faire mean? Why is it a cause of the Great Depression?

What is the Dust Bowl and what caused it?
Land in the "midwest" dried up due to overproduction and a drought and winds caused large dust storms. There was constant dust making it hard to go outside, see, keep homes clean, eat, talk, work, etc.
What caused farmers to overproduce their goods? Why was this bad for their business?
They were told to produce many goods for WWI purposes. After WWI they didn't have as many people using or buying their goods and they were unable to pay their debts on things like farming equipment and land. This hurt their business and sent them into their own depression!

Why were high taxes put on goods that other countries were buying from us? How did this impact America?
European countries did not pay back the money they owed U.S. from WWI. We taxes them to solve this problem but instead they just stopped buying our goods.
This negatively affected American businesses and caused them to struggle!
