This type of language is not hostile, aggressive, dismissal or judgemental. It shows openness, builds rapport and can be crucial in allowing a student to open up, communicate, vent and  self-regulate.  Whether or not you believe a student’s feelings are justified, do not judge or dismiss them. The root of the student’s distress might lie outside the classroom and a little support and encouragement can go a long way.
