Polyphonic is when there are multiple independent melodies, homophonic music can have multiple melodies but one is the clear melody while the others are accompaniment.

The Enlightenment's belief in individualism and universal human progress led to the shift that music should be enjoyed by the public, not just the court. This especially affected the middle class, who played a bigger role the market for music.
