People were only able to settle on a few rocky, flat beaches here because dense fir, pine, and cedar forests grew on the ocean's shore. The climate was mild, but they received heavy rain all year. Wildlife was plentiful in the area. The Kwakiutl used wood from the forest in this cultural region for housing.
