What is Natural Selection?
Give an example of Natural Selection!
Natural selections is the process of Organism with certain, more favorable, characteristics tending to reproduce more successfully
What does Fitness mean?
Survival of the Fittest and Evolution were proposed by what scientist?
Charles Darwin
What is the advantage of having different shaped beaks?
To be able to eat the food readily available in the environment.
What is the scientific term of the accumulation of advantageous changes over many generation?
What does Mutation mean?
A random change in genetic material. Mutations result from damage to DNA which is not repaired, errors in the process of replication, or from the insertion or deletion of segments of DNA. Mutations may or may not produce changes in the observable characteristics (phenotype) of an organism. Mutations are usually harmful or even fatal to an organism. However, if the mutation provides a selective advantage it can be naturally selected for and lead to evolution.
Behavioral changes of individuals of a species that allow for better survival. (Acquired traits)
Adaptation
Why are advantageous traits more likely to be passed onto offspring?
Because they are more likely to survive and reproduce.
When an organism goes through evolution, what does it mean?
When an organism goes through a process called evolution it refers to change over time!
What does DNA mean?
Deoxyribonucleic acid. A large biological molecule composed of subunits known as nucleotides strung together in long chains. The sequences of these nucleotides contain the information that cells need in order to grow, to divide into daughter cells, and to manufacture new proteins. Changes in DNA result in mutations, which may be beneficial, neutral, or deleterious to the organism. If these changes occur to DNA in sperm or egg cells, they could be passed onto the next generation.
When every organism of a species has died.
Extinction
Mutations are a change in what?
DNA
What is the definition for Survival of the Fitness?
Survival of the fittest, term made famous in the fifth edition (published in 1869) of On the Origin of Species by British naturalist Charles Darwin, which suggested that organisms best adjusted to their environment are the most successful in surviving and reproducing.
Simple Terms: Process by which individuals that are better suited to their environment survive and reproduce most successfully.
What does trait mean?
A physical or behavioral characteristic of an organism.
Where the better adapted organisms survive to pass traits along to offspring.
Natural Selection
Organisms with the most beneficial traits will survive. This is commonly known as
survival of the fittest
What does environmental factor mean?
An environmental factor, ecological factor or eco factor is any factor, abiotic or biotic, that influences living organisms. Abiotic factors include ambient temperature, amount of sunlight, air, soil, water and pH of the water soil in which an organism lives. Biotic factors would include the availability of food organisms and the presence of biological specificity, competitors, predators, and parasites.
Simple terms: Any Factor Abiotic or biotic, that influences living organism.
What does Population mean
A group of organisms of the same species that are in close enough proximity to allow them to interbreed.
What are the most studied animals in the galapagos?
Finches
A physical characteristic that allows an organism to survive in its environment.
Structural adaptation
