Mr. Krabbs wants to make Bikini Bottoms a nicer place to live. He has created a new sauce that he thinks will reduce the production of body gas associated with eating crabby patties from the Krusty Krab. He recruits 100 customers with a history of gas problems. He has 50 of them (Group A) eat crabby patties with the new sauce. The other 50 (Group B) eat crabby patties with sauce that looks just like new sauce but is really just mixture of mayonnaise and food coloring. Both groups were told that they were getting the sauce that would reduce gas production. Two hours after eating the crabby patties, 30 customers in group A reported having fewer gas problems and 8 customers in group B reported having fewer gas problems. Identify the: independent, dependent variables.
independent- New sauce dependent- the number of gas problems

What is science?
explaining natural phenomenon, trying to convince others that your explanation is correct.

Sponge Bob notices that his pal Gary is suffering from slimotosis, which occurs when the shell develops a nasty slime and gives off a horrible odor. His friend Patrick tells him that rubbing seaweed on the shell is the perfect cure, while Sandy says that drinking Dr. Kelp will be a better cure. Sponge Bob decides to test this cure by rubbing Gary with seaweed for 1 week and having him drink Dr. Kelp. After a week of treatment, the slime is gone and Gary’s shell smells better. Why is this a bad experiment? How could he improve this experiment?
Two variables are being tested at once.

How is a law different than a theory?
Laws describe things that occur in nature, theories explains them.

Write a claim for the following question? What is the best school in mexico?
CAT is the best school in Mexico

Salt in soil may affect plant growth
If I add salt to the soil, then my plant wont grow as well

To solve a problem, or to gain evidence to support your hypothesis.
What is the purpose of using the scientific method?
300
Why is it important to have a control group?
You need a group that does not change to compare to.
300
What is an observation? What is an inference?
An observation can be anything that you make note of with your senses, while an inference is an explanation that tries to make sense of your observation
300
List 5 sources of good evidence
Text Book, Expert, picture, drawing, observations, data collected during an experiment

Plant growth may be affected by the color of the light
If I change the color of light, then the plants growth will be affected.

Write down the steps of the scientific method
Question/problem Hypothesis experiment observations/data conclusion

Why would it be difficult to determine if cigarette smoking causes cancer?
You can't control the experiment, too many variables.
400
What is a theory?
An explanation inferred from several lines of evidence for something in nature that is logical, testable, and predictable

Write an Claim evidence, and reasoning for the following question. Who will do well on the test tomorrow?
I will do well on the test tomorrow Evidence: I will study Reasoning: Studying will help me know the information Evidence: I ask mr chichester questions in and out of class Reasoning: If I ask questions about concepts that are hard for me, I will understand them more Evidence: I will study with a friend Reasoning: I can study more effectively with a friend Evidence: I looked through the study guide on schoology Reasoning: The study guide has everything I need to know to do well on the test.

identify the independent and dependent variables, experimental and control group: Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers. He creates two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each group the same task (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. After an hour, Smithers counts how many stacks of papers each group has made. Group A made 1,587 stacks, Group B made 2,113 stacks.
independent variable: Special Juice Dependent Variable: Stack of paper or productivity experimental group- group of 50 that drank the special juice control- group that did not receive special juice
500
What is the purpose of having control variables or constants?
if you change more than one variable at a time, you wont know what is causing what.
500
How does something become a theory?
Something becomes a theory when scientists share their explanations, replicate experiments, and gain evidence to support their theory. Eventually it becomes well accepted when this occurs.
