After completing the three E's - Education, Experience, and Examination
What is AXP?
Architectural Experience Program. This is the name that NCARB uses for the experience portion of the licensing process.
What is NAAB?
National Architectural Accrediting Board. This is the organization in the United States that accredits colleges and universities architectural programs.
What is the ARE?
Architect Registration Exam. These are the exams your must take to satisfy the 'Examination' portion of the 3E's.
What does NCARB stand for?
National Council of Architectural Registration Boards
How do you gain credit for experience hours?
You earn them by working! You have to log them on your NCARB Record and have them signed off by a designated supervisor (usually your boss).
Are all architecture degrees offered in the United States accredited?
No. Many colleges and universities offer a Bachelor's of Science (B.S.) in Architecture. This type of degree is not accredited by NAAB.
When can you start taking the ARE?
Whenever (depending on the jurisdiction). In New Jersey, at least half of your experience hours must be logged first. In New York, you don't even have to be done with school to start taking the tests.
When can you start logging hours?
As soon as you complete High School (whenever you start working). If you are currently interning while going to school, or intern during your breaks from school, you can start logging your hours now.
Does NCARB License Architects?
No. At the end of the day your jurisdiction issues your license, NCARB works to make the process easier for you and your jurisdiction.

Is NJIT a NAAB accredited program?
Yes, the 5-year B.Arch program and the 3-year M.Arch program are both accredited by NAAB.
How many exams are there?
Six. These are based on the six divisions of architectural experience.
Who is a supervisor?
Your supervisor is responsible for your work on a daily basis (Boss or superior)
After completing the 3E's are you automatically licensed?
Almost! You still need to apply with proof of completing the 3Es to your jurisdiction to become fully licensed. It is simply a matter of paperwork.
In order to receive an Architect's License, how many total hours must you log?
3740 (but some states require an additional 1860)
What are the NAAB accredited degrees?
B.Arch, M.Arch, and D.Arch
What version of the ARE is currently used?
5.0 was fully instated on June 20, 2018.
Does the supervisor always have to be an architect?
No. Depending on the work setting that you choose to log hours your boss doesn't necessarily need to be a licensed architect. For example: you can log a certain number of hours while working on a construction site. Your supervisor in that case would be your contractor.
What is an NCARB Certificate?
An NCARB certificate is a certification that can be obtained after initial licensure that makes it easier to become licensed in other jurisdictions.
How long after completing hours do you have to log them onto your NCARB record?
Hours completed 8 months prior to the date submitted will receive full credit. Hours completed between 8 months and 5 years prior to the date submitted will receive half credit.
What is EESA?
Education Evaluation Services for Architects. EESA is a service that evaluates the education credentials of foreign-educated and broadly-experienced architects against the NCARB Education Standard.
What is the rolling clock time limit for exams?
5 years. This is the amount of time you have to take and pass all 6 exams within.
Can you change supervisors?
Yes, if you change your place of employment or if you have a change internally at your existing job then you can change your supervisor.
