This is the single most important intervention in cardiac arrest.

This person directs the code, giving orders to others involved in the code. This person is typically a provider but could be an RN if no physician or advanced practice provider is available.

This person can call for help when they identify someone in need of emergency assistance.

Does not have to just be the MA, RN...any staff person who notices a patient in need of assistance should call for help.
These events are done at least once a year at the site to practice skills and identify areas of improvement.
What is a mock code?
All staff should participate - Providers, nurses, MA's, PSR's, CPHW's, etc.
The correct ratio of chest compressions to breaths in CPR (children and adults).
What is 30 compressions and 2 breaths?
This is the term for when a patient does not have a pulse and is not breathing.
What is a Code Blue or cardiac arrest?
You continue CPR and rhythm checks until one of these two events occurs.
This phrase is used when paging for urgent assistance - but it is not a code blue.
What is "Rapid Response"?
A Rapid Response (previously referred to as RN Stat) is a page to request urgent assistance from other healthcare providers. All staff - providers, nurses, MA's, etc, should respond to find out if their assistance is needed.
When this device arrives, immediately use it to check the patient's heart rhythm.
What is the AED (automated external defibrillator)?
All staff should know where this is located, how to use the equipment on it, and that it should be brought to every code.
What is the emergency cart?
This number should be called whenever a patient is not breathing, has no pulse, or when directed to by a provider, RN, or site leader.

Who is the recorder?
Any staff member can be the recorder - ideally it is an MA, LVN, or RN.
When possible, this should be printed and sent with the paramedics when taking a patient to the hospital.

This can be found under "Patient Hub" and "Medical Summary". It provides an overview of the patient's medical history, medications, and allergies.

What is how to page overhead?
At least 2 inches (for adults) or 1/3 the depth of the chest (for infants) with a speed of 100-120/minute.
What is the correct depth and rate to do chest compressions?
These roles may direct the code until a provider arrives. They may also administer medications oxygen, do compressions, manage the AED, and check vitals.
What are the RN 1 & 2 roles?
The RN 1 role can be performed by the RN or another provider. The RN 2 role may be done by MA's, RNs or LVNs.
