(CN1)What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address where Internet users can access your website. A domain name is used for finding and identifying computers on the Internet because of this, domain names were developed and used to identify entities on the Internet rather than using IP addresses

(WD4)What information do you need in a trouble ticket when reporting a broken port?

  1. Location: building and room number, port number (if there is one)
  2. A description of the port and how it is broken
  3. All the basic information that belongs in a ticket.
  4. If possible, a picture of the broken port.

(WL5)What is the last resort solution for devices that, despite our best efforts/ troubleshooting, will not connect successfully?

Device enroll them

100

(WL9)A user calls in/comes in and they say that they have been device enrolled but are still having issues with connecting to the network. What can you do to check if they have been properly device enrolled?

They can ask a TL to check the MAC address on the clearpass policy manager for devices

(NCS1)What is the difference between a LAN, WAN, and WLAN?

  1. A LAN (“Local Area Network”) is a network that connects to a single connection (a single router)
    1. Example: A home or office network
  2. WLAN: (“Wireless Local Area Network”) is a network that connects two or more devices using LAN (multiple routers, access points)
    1. Example: Campus, big office, school
  3. A WAN (“Wide Area Network”) is a network that is much more extensive than a LAN (usually hundreds-thousands of miles). While WAN is the relevant term to use to describe large, dispersed networks in general, it usually means the internet as a whole.
    1. Example: WWW (World Wide Web), 4G LTE

(CN2)What is DNS? What does it stand for?

  1. DNS (Domain Name System) - “The phonebook of the Internet”
    1. People access websites through domain names, like nytimes.com or espn.com.
  2. DNS translates domain names to IP addresses so browsers can load Internet resources.

(WL1)What website would you visit to connect to the wifi?

100

(WL5b)What information do you need to device enroll and who can do this?

Device type (Windows/Mac/iPhone), device’s MAC address & user’s ID number. TL’s and FT staff can device enroll.

100

(WL10)How does a user get Restricted Guest Access to the Wifi and what are the restrictions?

rhodywifi.uri.edu → restricted guest; they cannot use URI sites like Brightspace and e-Campus

100

(NCS2)What is an Access Point (AP)? How is it different from a router? Locate one, and explain how it works.

Routers distribute IP addresses, and access points boost the signal strength of the Wifi

100

(WD1)What is the difference between a phone cable and an ethernet cable?

An ethernet cable is larger than a phone cable (requires more wire for more data transfer), the connector on the end of the ethernet cable is larger than phone, and the connector on an ethernet cable has 8 prongs and phone cable has 4.

100

(WL2)What does Cloudpath install on the machine?

The certificates for ClearPass to monitor the machine and make sure it is meeting the security requirements for URI_Secure

100

(WL6)Which network(s) does Clearpass work on?

URI_Open and URI_Secure

100

(WL11) If a user wants their previously device enrolled device unenrolled, what should they do?

Consultants cannot do this, but they can ask a TL who then check with the user’s MAC address

100

(NCS3)What is a Rogue Router? Explain why having them on campus is a problem

A Rogue Router (or a Rogue DHCP server) is a wired or wireless router connected to the URI network when not explicitly authorized by IT Services. When a rogue router is connected to the URI network, it poses a risk to security. Rogue routers do not require user authentication and may allow a virus-infected/or/malicious machine to join the network. An incorrectly configured router can cause interruption in connectivity to computers on the same subnet.

100

(WD2)What is an ethernet switch/hub and how do you set one up?

An ethernet hub is a device that is used to distribute signal to 2 or more devices. This is useful for dorms and offices, because ports are supposed to only have one active connection. To set one up you will need multiple ethernet cables, one to go into the wall and the other cables go to the other devices. You will also need the adapter cable to power the device.

100

(WL3)Which operating systems support manual configuration? Demonstrate how to do so on these devices.

a.Windows, Android, Linux, and Mac

i. Mac = iPad instructions

100

(WL7)User wants to connect a media device to the network. Explain how they would do this & what information will they need from the device?

  1. They would first get their MAC address from the media device they are trying to connect.
  2. Next they will head over to rhodywifi.uri.edu and choose the register a device option, use their LDAP credentials to log in.
  3. Lastly create a device and input the MAC Address of the device .
    1. Note it takes around half an hour to a full hour for this to process. Another note that the device must connect to URI Open and be restarted after the half hour
100

Which Italian city is famous for its leaning tower?

Pisa

100

(NCS4)What is the difference between a physical port and a virtual port?

  1. Physical port - any physical interface that allows the connecting of cables to computers or devices (ex: ethernet ports, usb ports, serial ports, etc.)
  2. Virtual port - an address on a single machine that can be tied to a specific piece of software. It allows your server to be able to communicate using more than one application.
100

(WD3)If a user calls to inform you a port is “broken”, what are questions you can ask to confirm this?

If there are two ports try the other port, try multiple devices and/or cables, ask them to describe the problem or if the port looks damaged, ask them to send a picture to our email.

100

(WL4)Where can you find the directions for manual configuration?

URI ITS websites, KB article, or the Procedures binder (in the common drive)

100

(WL8)A user’s device that was registered is not working after waiting the recommended time for the system to update. What is a common problem that the user might have done wrong?

They did not input the correct MAC Address or are trying to connect to URI_Secure or did not restart the device

100

Which state is called the Golden state?

California

(NCS5)What is a Firewall? How does it work?

  1. A firewall is a program that decides whether traffic coming into a server or going out should be allowed.
  2. A firewall usually works by creating rules for which type of traffic is acceptable on which ports.
  3. Firewalls block ports that are not used by a specific application on a server.
