What is an Open Syllable?
An open syllable ends in one vowel. The vowel in an open, accented syllable is long; code it with a macron. Long vowels say their name.

What is a derivative?
A base word plus a suffix is called a derivative.
How is a contraction made? For example: it's
it is = it's
A contraction is made by putting two words together and leaving out a letter or letters. An apostrophe is used in place of the missing letter or letters.
An apostrophe can be used to show ownership. For example: Pip owns a pin. It's Pip's pin. Who owns the pin? Pip.

The first word is spelled with the letter a. How is it pronounced? This is a Special Situation.
When the word a occurs with other words, it is pronounced (u). Code it with a dot.
What is a Closed Syllable?
A closed syllable ends in at least one consonant after one vowel. The vowel in a closed syllable is short; code it with a breve.
How do we get our key word when we discover a new concept?
The key word comes from the riddle after discovering the new concept. It rhymes with words in the riddle.

What is the plural of the noun, dog?
Dogs.
Singular means one. Plural means more than one. Suffix -s makes a base word plural.
What is a verb?
A verb is a word that shows action. Somebody or something (the noun) is doing something. Tells what is happening in a sentence.
The consonant letter s can be pronounced two different ways. What are the two sounds it makes?
The letter s can be pronounced (s). The (s) sound is blocked by the teeth. The (s) sound is an unvoiced consonant sound. It is a continuant sound.
The letter s can be pronounced (z). The (z) sound is blocked by the teeth. The (z) sound is a voiced consonant sound. Code a voiced s with a voice line. It is a continuant sound.

Floss Rule is when we hear (f), (l), (s) sound in the final position of a one-syllable word with a short vowel sound.

What is a Consonant Cluster?
A consonant cluster has two or more adjacent letters that make one sound. An example is ng = (ng) as in king. We code it with an underline.
