- Tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal) are characterized by alternating phases of tonic, followed by a phase of uncontrolled jerking (clonic). Tonic-clonic seizures may be preceded by aura and followed by headache, confusion, and sleep.
- Clonic seizures - patients exhibit jerking in different parts of the body.
- Tonic seizures, in which there is sustained muscle stiffening. They usually occur in children.
- Absence (petit mal) seizures are characterized by 3-Hz spike-and-wave on EEG and a blank stare during the episode. There is no postictal confusion (confusion after the seizure).
- Myoclonic seizures involve quick and repetitive jerks, usually of the arms and legs.
- Atonic seizures - often confused with fainting because patients experience “drop attacks” due to a brief loss of muscle tone, causing the patient to fall to the floor. They usually occur in children.
